1. About this policy

Browser Recorder is a Chrome extension maintained by Nabendu Biswas (nabendu82). Its purpose is to record a browser tab, a window or a screen you choose, with shared audio when available and optional microphone audio, and save the result to your device. This policy describes the data practices of version 1.0.0.

The extension does not require an account and has no analytics, advertising, tracking, automatic uploads or remote recording service. We do not receive your recordings or locally stored preferences through the extension.

2. Data the extension handles

  • Recorded video and audio. When you start recording, the extension captures the selected source, its shared audio when available, and microphone audio if enabled and permitted. This may include personal or sensitive information visible or audible in that source. Media is processed locally only to create your recording, play captured tab audio back to your speakers, and provide a preview or download where available.
  • Recording preferences. Your selected recording mode and microphone preference are saved in Chrome's local extension storage. The extension does not use Chrome's synced storage.
  • Temporary session information. Recording mode, start time, the relevant tab ID and a randomly generated recording identifier are kept in Chrome's session storage to coordinate recording controls, the timer and the REC toolbar badge. The identifier is for a recording session, not a persistent user identifier.
  • Download information. The extension creates a timestamped filename and uses temporary local media URLs and, for tab recordings, a Chrome download ID to save the video and track download completion.

Browser Recorder does not maintain a browsing-history log, inspect page text or form fields separately, or collect passwords or payment details as structured data. However, anything displayed or audible in a selected source can appear in the recording. Choose the source carefully before recording private information.

3. Permissions and your choices

The extension requests four Chrome extension permissions for its recording features:

  • tabCapture: capture video and audio from the current tab after you start a tab recording.
  • offscreen: keep tab recording running in an extension document when the toolbar popup closes.
  • downloads: save a completed tab recording to your device.
  • storage: remember recording preferences locally and maintain temporary session state.

Screen and window recordings use Chrome's screen-sharing picker. You choose the source and whether to share its audio where Chrome supports that option. Microphone access is optional and uses a browser permission prompt. Granting microphone permission alone does not start a recording; the extension's microphone-permission setup briefly opens an audio stream to request access and then immediately stops it without saving audio.

You can stop recording with the extension's Stop & save controls, or end screen sharing with Chrome's own controls. You can disable the Microphone option for future recordings, revoke microphone permission in Chrome, or disable or uninstall the extension.

4. Storage, retention and deletion

Recording chunks are held in memory until a video file is created. Temporary recording data can remain in the recorder page for preview or downloading again, or in the offscreen document until it closes. Close the recorder page or Chrome to release temporary data. An interrupted recording may be lost before it is saved.

Finished recordings are saved using Chrome's download behavior, normally to your Downloads folder. They remain there until you delete them. Uninstalling the extension removes its stored preferences but does not delete downloaded videos. Session information is temporary and is cleared when the recording ends or the browser session is reset. We cannot access or delete these local files remotely.

The extension does not add encryption to downloaded videos. Your device security, folder permissions and any backup or folder-sync services you configure determine who can access saved recordings. To remove a recording, delete the file and any copies you have shared or backed up; empty the relevant trash if you want to remove that copy too.

5. Sharing and third parties

Browser Recorder does not transmit recordings, microphone audio, preferences or session information to the developer or third parties. It does not sell this data, use it for personalized advertising, or use it to determine creditworthiness or lending eligibility. There are no third-party analytics or advertising services embedded in the extension.

If you manually share a downloaded video, save it in a cloud-synced folder, or follow a support link, that service handles the information under its own privacy policy. Sending a support email shares your email address and anything you include with us and our email provider so we can respond. Do not include private recordings or sensitive information in public support issues.

6. Chrome Web Store Limited Use

Browser Recorder uses information obtained through Google APIs only for its recording features and follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. User data is not used for unrelated purposes, sold to data brokers, or transferred for advertising or lending decisions.

7. Visiting this website

This policy page is hosted on nabendu.org. Visiting the website sends ordinary web requests to its hosting provider, Vercel. The website also uses Vercel Web Analytics to measure page visits, including page URLs, referrers, browser and device information, and approximate location. See Vercel's Web Analytics privacy information and Vercel's privacy policy for details.

Website traffic measurement is separate from Browser Recorder: the extension contains no analytics integration and does not send your recordings to this website or to Vercel.

8. Contact and policy changes

For privacy questions, contact Nabendu Biswas at nabendu.biswas@gmail.com. For a question about a recording, you can describe the issue without attaching the video.

Changes to this policy will be published at this URL with an updated date. If a future extension version changes how it handles data, this policy and the extension's disclosures will be updated to describe those changes.
